About Us

A bit of background......

Stand-by-me was launched in 2014 to support bereaved children, young people and their families in North Hertfordshire and Stevenage.
Our focus is on providing support and information for bereaved families, regardless of when or how they have been bereaved.
Before we launched, there was no dedicated bereavement service in North Herts and Stevenage, but children and young people told us that there was a great need for this support both at home and in school. So, we worked with a group of bereaved young people to find out what they would have found most helpful when they were bereaved and how we could help make life easier for other families who were going through a similar experience.
Following on from these conversations we put together three things to help support bereaved families:
  • A website packed with information for children, young people, parents/carers and the professionals who work with them.
  • A telephone helpline for parent/s & carers - 07469 255163
  • A group programme to help children and young people understand their grief and help them feel less isolated.
The Stand-by-me group programme brings bereaved children and young people together so they can see that they are not alone. Run over 6 sessions andstaffed by trained and experienced volunteers, the group gives them a safe space to share their experiences and emotions with others who understand how it feels when someone close to them dies.

Our team

Our team of mental health professionals, bereavement specialists and volunteer bereavement supporters work together to provide high quality support and information.

The group programme is staffed by a dedicated team of highly trained volunteers who make sure that every child and young person feels safe and supported throughout their time with us.

Some of the young people who attend our groups go on to become Stand-by-me Young Ambassadors. This fantastic team of young people help to raise awareness of our charity and of childhood bereavement, as well as supporting us at events and giving them the opportunity to gain new skills.

Our Board of Trustees all come from the local area and bring a wealth of experience in business, finance, health and social care to the charity.
