Volunteering with Stand-by-me

All Stand-by-me groups are staffed by our volunteers and led by experienced group leaders.

Our volunteers are at the lifeblood of our service.

We offer comprehensive training as well as regular supervision and support from our experienced clinicial team so our volunteers feel confident that they have the skills to work with our groups.

We run 6 to 7 six-week group programmes per year divided between reception, primary and secondary- aged children.

Can you make a difference to a bereaved child or young person's life?

How much time will I have to give?

  • We estimate around 14 half days (usually Saturdays) per year - although some volunteers like to do more.

  • There is also 22 hours of initial training

  • We provide 60 minutes of group supervision per month (term-time only)

Do I need experience in working with bereaved children?

  • Not at all. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds, ages and experience. Most have no previous training in bereavement, but all have a passionate interest in making life better for bereaved children and young people in our area.
